The 2019 Masters in Augusta, Georgia marked a major milestone for golf legend Tiger Woods. While Tiger Woods is no stranger to winning tournaments, before April’s Masters it had been 14 years since he last won a Masters tournament. At this year’s Masters, fans watched in awe as Tiger made his way up the leaderboard and clinched his first major tournament win in over a decade. As Tiger celebrated his incredible comeback win, lifting the Master’s Trophy in his green jacket, we spotted an incredibly interesting choice of timepiece: the Rolex Deepsea D-Blue.

While it’s not surprising that Tiger Woods would be wearing a Rolex during the tournament, as he is a Rolex Ambassador, we were intrigued by his choice of Rolex.

The Rolex Deepsea isn’t one of Rolex’s most popular models, but is instead considered more of a cult classic for die hard Rolex enthusiasts. The Rolex Deepsea is a refresh of Rolex’s largest dive watch. Released quite recently in the spring of 2018, the Rolex Deepsea features an updated movement, the 3235 movement.

The 3235 movement was a welcome update to the Deepsea. This modern movement features 70 hours of power reserve, an anti-magnetic nickel-phosphorous construction, and Rolex’s Chronoenergy escapement. The Deepsea now joins other Rolex updated models that feature this advanced, superb new movement, including Rolex's the Sea-Dweller , which was outfitted with the 3235 starting in 2017.

The Rolex Deepsea also received other updates upon its re-release. In addition to outfitting the Deepsea with an updated modern movement, Rolex has redesigned the watch’s lugs, bracelet, and Oysterlock clasp.

One reason the Rolex Deepsea is more of a cult classic than a universal classic is its size. The Rolex Deepsea features a 44mm case, which is quite large and not comfortable for every wrist. This doesn’t seem to be an issue for this year’s Masters winner, however, as Tiger Woods has actually been spotted wearing his Rolex Deepsea D-Blue quite often.

The Rolex Deepsea comes with a number of different dial options, though it’s the D-Blue dial that appears on Tiger Woods’ Masters watch, which seems to be among his favorite watches. The Deepsea D-Blue is a special version of the Deepsea that features a dial that was designed to commemorate James Cameron’s historic solo dive. This dial’s color is gradient, going from deep blue to a bottomless black, which represents Cameron’s descent into the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

While Rolex is often worn by winners of major tournaments, we usually see more universally loved models, such as Brooks Koepka’s ceramic Daytona . Tiger Woods’ choice of timepiece was an interesting one. We’d have to say we look forward to what the golf legend may wear during future wins, should his comeback win turn into a comeback streak.
