Omega has been partnered with the James Bond film franchise for 25 years, since James Bond first wore an Omega Seamaster in 1995’s GoldenEye. Last month, at a gala celebrating the 25th anniversary of their partnership with the Bond franchise, Omega announced what many fans of Omega and James Bond had been eagerly anticipating: a brand new James Bond watch for 2020.
The next James Bond movie, No Time to Die, is coming out in 2020. And according to Omega’s latest announcement, Daniel Craig will be sporting the brand new Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition in the film. Omega also announced, of course, that the new Bond watch will soon be available for purchase. Omega has stated that Daniel Craig was actually involved in the design process of the new Bond watch, which is a notable first for a James Bond watch.
So what does the latest James Bond watch from Omega have to offer? Read on to learn everything you need to know about the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition and to learn more about how Daniel Craig influenced its design.
The Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition: Specs and Design Details
The Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition was specifically designed with military needs in mind and it features numerous design details that reflect military influence. The new watch’s 42mm case is made from Grade 2 Titanium, a strong yet lightweight material that is appropriate for military use. The timepiece also features a unique doming on its sapphire crystal that creates a slightly slimmer, sleeker profile. Inside the watch, the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition features an Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8806, a highly precise calibre that is resistant to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss.
This watch features a series of numbers and letters on its NAIAD LOCK caseback which adhere to military code format. According to Omega, these engaravings are meant to call back to military issue watches from the 1960s, the decade of the original Bond film’s release. The caseback is engraved with “0552,” “923 7697,” “A,” “007,” and “62.” “0552” is a naval-code number, “923 7697” is the number for a diver’s watch,” and “A” is a letter indicating that the watch has a screw-in crown. Then “007” is of course James Bond’s agent number, while “62” is a reference to the year the first Bond film, Dr. No, was in theaters. The caseback also features a “broadarrow” marking, a British and Commonwealth military mark.
In terms of aesthetics, the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition has a decidedly vintage look. This new Omega watch features a new aluminum dial that is designed to have the same aged dark brown patina color that certain vintage watches gain over time. The Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition features a brown “tropical” aluminum bezel which echoes the dial’s vintage coloring. Buyers can opt to buy this watch with either a Milanese bracelet or a striped NATO strap in black, gray, brown, and tropical yellow, both of which have a vintage look.
Daniel Craig and the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition’s Design
Omega president and CEO Raynald Aeschlimann has stated that the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition’s design included input from Daniel Craig, who will be playing Bond for the final time in No Time to Die. Craig has previously played the famous spy in four other Bond films: Casino Royale, Quantam of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre. While other actors have worn Omega watches while playing Bond, this is the first time a Bond actor has given input on the secret agent’s timepiece.
Aeschlimann stated that “[Craig] loves watches. He knows watches because he wears watches and he had input.” Aeschlimann called out the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition’s Milanese titanium mesh bracelet as Craig’s most notable contribution, and also stated that Craig was influential in the watch’s lightness and vintage look.
Daniel Craig has also spoken about his input on the design of the new Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition. Craig said in an official statement, “When working with Omega, we decided that a lightweight watch would be key for a military man like 007. I also suggested some vintage touches and colors to give the watch a unique edge.”
Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition: Release Date and Number of Editions
While other James Bond watches have been released in limited quantities (generally 7,007 models), Omega has stated that the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition is non-limited edition. This non-limited edition timepiece is set to be released in February of 2020, two months before the release of No Time To Die. However, if you’d like to see the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition in action before April, you can catch several glimpses of it in the No Time to Die trailer.
